Eurasian Economic Union, Indonesia Strike Free Trade Deal

(MENAFN) Leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) sealed a major free trade agreement with Indonesia subsequent to a summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, marking a significant development in international trade relations.

At the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, the EAEU's highest decision-making body, a total of 20 documents were signed, the Kremlin confirmed in a statement on Sunday. The agreement with Indonesia is one of the key highlights, officially between "the Eurasian Economic Union and its member states, on the one hand, and the Republic of Indonesia, on the other hand."

The narrow-format session, held in St. Petersburg, saw the participation of the presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, along with Armenia’s prime minister. In a broader session that followed, Uzbekistan’s president joined the discussions, alongside ambassadors from Cuba and Iran to Russia. Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso also played a role in the proceedings, the Kremlin statement noted.

Formed under a treaty that took effect in January 2015, the EAEU includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia as full members. The union also has four observer states—Cuba, Iran, Moldova, and Uzbekistan.

In related news, Moldova continues to move forward with its EU integration efforts. Following the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, Moldova was granted EU candidate status later that year. In December 2023, the European Council decided to begin accession talks with Chisinau.
